Recently, an art workshop on canvas and rhinestone painting was held in Vegas Mall. It was a beautiful and creative session, as per the artists present there. Now what is canvas painting and how is it different from rhinestone painting? Lets get to know. A canvas painting is a regular painting done on a cloth sheet using different style of colors depending on the artist. The most common are acrylic colors, oil paints or palette knives. Artists can draw and paint landscapes, portraits and sometimes abstract art. People prefer canvas painting because it is done on a smooth surface, gives professional look and is also long lasting.

Now rhinestone painting is about giving a 3D look to the canvas. It is more like a craft activity. In rhinestone painting you need a kit that includes a canvas, stones and a pen tool. It sounds complicated but it is actually very simple because the canvas has numbers or symbols and you just have to match stones with the symbols and stick them. It could be religious art, nature scenes, portrait or custom photos. The canvas painting has been around for more than hundred of years. It became popular during the Renaissance (14th-17th century) which is also known for rebirth of interest in the art, science and philosophy of classical Greece and Rome.

Earlier artists used wooden panels but canvas became preferred because it was lighter and easier to carry. Famous artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Vincent van Gogh helped make canvas painting widely popular. Over time it evolved into different styles like realism, impressionism, abstract art. Where as rhinestone painting is much more modern. The word 'rhinestone' comes from the Rhine river, where shiny stones were originally found. Earlier rhinestone were used in jewelry, clothing decoration. If you know about rhinestone (diamond) painting, it started around 2010s. Than it became popular as a DIY craft hobby, especially in art workshops. The painting is inspired by mosaic art, where you place small pieces that forms images as well as by cross-stitch embroidery.
